Solomon puts it well, “Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body” (Ecclesiastes 12:12). There are no shortage of books out there; both good and bad. Given that, I have always thought recommended reading lists were of great help in knowing what books to grab on various doctrinal topics. My list will always be growing as I come across more good books to pass along.
Books for the Non-Believer. These are books I often find myself recommending for non-believers to read in order to hear the gospel presented clearly and winsomely as well as have common objections answers and unbelief challenged.
Essentials for a New Believer. Peter exhorts new believers, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2:2). Growth in Christ necessitates good, spiritual milk. I have found these books to have it in plentiful supply.
My Favorites. I thought for starters I would share some of my favorites. This list isn’t comprehensive and there a lot of great books left out, but I am convinced that every Christian should get around to reading each of these as soon as they can.
About God. As Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” There is no greater subject to study than God: who He is, what He has done, and what He wants. There is nothing more life changing than coming to know the truth about the One who gave/gives you life.
About Jesus. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” (Hebrews 1:1-2). Jesus Christ is the central figure around which all of history is centered on. All things have been created by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). So, obviously, it is important to read books about Him!
About the Holy Spirit. As my favorite rapper Shai Linne eloquently puts it, “Praise God the Holy Spirit, 3rd person of the Trinity / Distinct from Father and Son, yet share in Their divinity / Holy Spirit we praise You, You don’t like the spotlight / You’d rather point away from Yourself and give props to Christ” (Triune Praise from Attributes of God album). Even though He loves to point us to Christ, we do very well to study His Person and Work so we may rejoice all the more in Him!
About Man. No one knows us better than our Creator. Therefore, to know the truth, even about ourselves, we go to the One who formed us and breathed life into us in order to learn about who we are and what purpose we have (Genesis 2:7).
About the Church. It is important for Christians to know and believe that Jesus loves His church a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Also, being a part of a local church is essential to being an obedient Christian. Therefore, getting our thoughts organized, our heads informed, our hearts inflamed, and our hands guided when it comes to the things of the church is of vital importance. Here are some of my favorites on the subject of the church.
